The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is proud to announce the Third Annual African American Conference, Release the Silence: Navigating the Caregiving Journey. This free, community-centered event will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM (Doors open at 8:30 AM) at Greenwood Oasis, 7621 S Greenwood Ave, Chicago, IL 60619.

This event is designed to support the Black and African American community in navigating the complexities of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving. Whether you are currently a caregiver, preparing to become one, or a healthcare professional, this conference will provide valuable resources, support, and insights to help you on your caregiving journey.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2024 Facts and Figures Report, African-Americans are about two times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other dementias compared to white individuals. However, the underlying reasons for this increased burden remain unclear and require further research. This event is designed to support the Black and African American community in navigating the complexities of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving.

What to Expect:

●       Inspiring Talks: Hear from experienced caregivers who share their personal journeys and insights.

●       Helpful Resources: Learn about various resources available for caregivers and families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

●       Support Networks: Connect with others who understand your challenges and share advice and support.

●       Vendors: Meet vendors who specialize in services for caregivers and dementia care.

The conference will feature a wide array of community partners including New Life Covenant Southeast, Chi Eta Phi, Alpha Eta Chapter, Scottish Rite Prince Hall Masons, and our Conference Planning Committee made up of local leaders, pastors, and caregivers. Their collective efforts aim to provide the Black and African American community with essential tools for caregiving and promote open discussions around Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
